An all-new Mazda CX-9 debuted in 2016, bringing in the latest take on the brand’s design language that has since trickled down through the lineup. There have been a few small updates since its debut, but the CX-9 has remained mostly unchanged, and we expect much of the same from the 2020 CX-9.

On the outside, we expect nothing new from the 2020 Mazda CX-9, as we anticipate it to look nearly identical to the current model. With this design still so fresh and unique, there is really no reason to make any changes.

Inside, the current CX-9 is surprisingly luxurious, especially in its Signature trim level. In 2019, the big news in the CX-9 was the addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This and the new 360-degree camera brought it in line with the offerings of its competitors. We expect this to all remain the same in the 2020 Mazda CX-9.

With no changes anywhere else on the 2020 Mazda CX-9, we also expect no changes under its hood. If this is the case, it will come with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will deliver up to 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, if you run premium fuel. If you go the cheap route and use regular fuel, the power will fall to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft.

Thanks to its strong platform and body, and advanced safety tech like its available automatic emergency braking, the current Mazda CX-9 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Keep in mind there is no standard advanced safety in the CX-9, as the base Sport trim requires the $1,290 Power Driver’s Seat and i-ActiveSense Package to add safety bits like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise, and more.

There is no official on-sale date yet for the 2020 Mazda CX-9, but we expect production to kick off in September 2019.

With no big changes coming, we expect nothing more than inflationary price increases for the 2020 CX-9 relative to the 2019 model, which ranges from $33,325 to $46,410 (destination fees included).

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 will compete with the Chevy Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Honda Pilot.
